Mrs. Alexandra Juch Interim Principal

It's nice to meet you!

March 16, 2017

Dear Parents,

It seems that I always begin my letters with something about the weather. It can’t be helped. I was born and raised in New England! I know many of you were ready for spring after the very warm temperatures of a few weeks ago, and may have even thought that winter might actually be over. After all, February 2nd was a cloudy day and the groundhog did not see his shadow. At least, any groundhogs in Falls Village, and there are plenty! But, what a week! I love a good blizzard, and this one was overdue!

This is the time of year when our calendars at school become very full, from now until the end of the school year, and 2 unexpected days off at a critical time can sometimes throw us into a tailspin. Luckily for our 4th graders, we were able to reschedule Arts Day, for today!

This letter is mostly about dates as I know from experience that it is sometimes hard to keep track of everything, especially when there is a disruption in the ‘regular’ routine. So please make note:

Today. 2nd Trimester Report cards will be coming home with K-4.

Friday March 17. Tomorrow! No school for students. Teachers will be here all day or professional in-service.

Monday March 20. 2nd Trimester Report Cards will be coming home with 5-8. These are generated in Powerschool and we need an extra day to make sure they are right. Our Powerschool guru, Bethanne Krupa, has taken a new position in Newtown and while she continues to support us from afar it is still a challenging platform that we want to make sure we get right.

Wednesday March 22 and Thursday March 23. Next week! These are both 1:00 dismissal days for students and the time for our conferences. In Kindergarten, these are Parent-Teacher conferences. In 1-8, these are Student Led Conferences (SLCs), and your child comes with you. We have been preparing for these SLCs all year (although missing 2 days of school in the week leading up to them did not support student preparations!) and we are hoping for 100% participation. If you are not available to come for a conference because of a travel or work schedule, it would be great to have another relative come, or a close family friend, so your son or daughter has the opportunity to present their learning, their accomplishments and their goals.

For those parents that have more than one child in the school, and have conferences that are scheduled back to back, the library will be open and staffed by our student council for children that need to wait. There will be a donation jar for anyone that wants to support the efforts of this indefatigable group.

Friday March 24. Our annual Lasagna Dinner! (Snow date is Saturday) This event always sells out so if you are hoping for tickets, don’t delay. If you come hoping to purchase them at the door you will most likely be turned away, and disappointed! Thank you (!) to those who have volunteered to make a dessert. Remember to drop them off at the school on that Friday.

Monday March 27. 5th and 8th graders (not 6th and 7th) will be taking the Science CMT (CT Mastery Test) on this day. This is an assessment that is given in one day (~70 minutes) to all 5th and 8th graders across the state of Connecticut. At Kellogg, students will be taking the Science CMT in a classroom setting, using Chromebooks. If you have any questions about the CMT, please do not hesitate to contact Joe Markow or me.

Monday March 27. First day of softball and baseball practice. Not March 20th as previously reported.

Wednesday March 29. This is a 1:00 dismissal day for students. Teacher will be involved in professional in-service.

Thursday May 4. This is our annual Spring Concert. It is a long way off, but the date has been changed from the original date of May 3 that went home on the calendar in your back to school packet. So be sure to mark your calendar. You would not want to miss this!

Tuesday June 20. As of today, this is the last day of school. But only mark that in pencil, because that can change! As an FYI for our 8th grade parents, we will set our graduation date on April 1st. I will send out an email to all 8th grade parents on that day.

Phew! I think that’s it for now. As always, please contact me if you ever have any questions. I am (almost) always available and would love to hear from you!

Stay warm! Enjoy the snow! Cheers!

Jenny Law, Principal
